Can I Run Star Citizen?
The Star Citizen system requirements state you will need at least 40 GB free storage space to install the game. To play Star Citizen you will need a minimum CPU equivalent to an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000. Whereas, an AMD Ryzen 5 1600 is recommended in order to run it. The minimum memory requirement for Star Citizen is 16 GB of RAM installed in your computer. The cheapest graphics card you can play it on is an AMD Radeon R5 M330. Furthermore, an AMD Radeon HD 7990 is recommended in order to run Star Citizen with the highest settings. Higher end hardware or tweaking of settings is needed to run Star Citizen, it is an ambitious game with stunning graphics, but is also an unstable game. Going for the minimum AMD Radeon R5 M330 is not recommended. With the recommended AMD Radeon HD 7990 it is a safer option for Star Citizen, and the equivalent NVIDIA GTX 980 too. But going higher with anything above their specs would make your life easier.
The CryTek engine is taxing for the CPU, and directly affects the frame rate, the recommended AMD Ryzen 5 1600 over the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000 will avoid frustration. A quad core processor or above means a possible improvement compared to others. The AMD Ryzen 5 1600 also allows for overclocking from its base clock speed of 3.2GHZ, much higher than the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000’s 2.0GHZ clock speed. An SSD for Star Citizen is not required, but is highly recommended and helps keep loading times to a minimum and the speed of gameplay at a higher rate after the loading has been completed. Star Citizen is very RAM intensive, so having at least 16GB is recommended, otherwise the game would slow when excess memory goes into your SSD/HDD.
With no Star Citizen Steam launch on the horizon you will need to go straight to Roberts Space Industries and use the Star Citizen Launcher to make the game work. Though it is easy when you have downloaded the game to add the game to your Steam collection. There are frequent Star Citizen patches so the game is a bit of movable feast, but the devs have build a good community on their Hardware Spectrum forum - you'll find support on graphic options and a bunch of crazy set ups.
Even though the project began in 2012 it is still in beta, and there is still no word on an official Star Citizen release date. Doesn't stop it being the most crow funded game in history!
Star Citizen Performance Guide
Looking to improve your FPS in Star Citizen? This is a pretty demanding game so try some of the following steps.
- Better Star Citizen performance has been found with V-Sync turned off.
- Deleting the shader folder found in the USER folder after an update can also fix issues. To do this go through the folders INSTALL FOLDER\StarCitizen\LIVE\USER and delete the “shaders” folder.
- Turning the “Chromatic Aberration” slider to 0 in the options also may affect performance positively and only a small aspect of visuals in taken away.
- Star Citizen will always be best on higher end hardware, but due to constant updates and not being officially released yet, requirements and overall performance is subject to change.
Star Citizen will run on PC system with 64 bit version Window (Windows 7 service pack 1 (64 bit) or higher) and upwards.
