Can I Run Red Dead Redemption 2?
Red Dead Redemption 2 system requirements include an Intel Core i5-2500K CPU at a minimum to run Red Dead Redemption 2. However, the developers recommend a CPU greater or equal to an Intel Core i7-4770K. The Red Dead Redemption 2 download size will require you to have at least 150 GB storage space available. The cheapest graphics card you can play it on is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M. But, according to Rockstar the recommended graphics card is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060. The Red Dead Redemption system requirements also ask for a minimum of 8 GB RAM installed in your computer. Ideally, make sure you have 12 GB RAM in order to run RDR2 to its full potential.
Sometimes, you’ve got to wait a little longer to get the very best and that’s certainly the case with Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC. Available on the consoles in time for Christmas 2018, PC owners had to wait a full year for their iteration of RDR2 to arrive, with the Steam release scheduled even later still.
The gargantuan install size aside – you’ll need 150GB of space – the fact that the original release came out on Xbox One led to the assumption that it’d run no problem on any number of more powerful PCs. Yet Rockstar has spent the extra time adding so many extras that, as we’ll get to in a moment, there are some technical issues to deal with.
On the game front though, RDR2 for PC includes new ‘story mode’ content such as extra weapons, bounty hunting missions and hideouts. It comes with free access to the multiplayer Red Dead Online as well as extra specialist roles. Simply put, all the tweaks, additions and modifications that have made this highly-acclaimed game so popular on the consoles are available on PC from day one.
There is a Red Dead Redemption 2 Steam edition, as well as being available through the Rockstar Games Launcher.
Graphically, no one will be surprised that RDR2 on PC is the best-looking version. Increased draw distance, better global illumination, environmental textures, reflections and ambient occlusion and ultrawide aspect ratio across multi-monitor support offer an unparalleled level of immersion. Plus there’s that unlocked frame rate too.
Yet, as it turns out, so many improvements have taken a bite out of Red Dead Redemption 2’s frame rate. Shortly after the game’s release, Nvidia announced that even its high-performing GeForce RTX 2080 Ti graphics card couldn’t give you RDR2 at 4K and 60 frames per second. However, the new RTX 3080 card should be capable of running Red Dead Redemption 2 4k 60FPS.
Red Dead Online
If you're not interested in playing the campaign and just want to play multiplayer, then it's got a whole lot cheaper, with a standalone 'Red Dead Online' game, which is the same multiplayer as RDR2 minus the campaign, costing just $4.99/£4.49. The Red Dead Online system requirements are exactly the same as RDR2.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Improve FPS and performance
We recommend turning down/off the following graphical options, as these have the biggest hit to performance:
- MSAA
- Grass Level of Detail
- Tree Tesselation
- Reflection Quality
- Water Quality
- Volumetrics Quality
- Shadow Quality
- Texture Quality
You may also want to try some of the following steps:
Close resource-heavy background programs before running RDR2- Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to see which programs are using the most resources.
Run the game in fullscreen as opposed to windowed.
Ensure you have the latest graphics cards drivers installed.
Red Dead Redemption 2 will run on PC system with Windows 7 and upwards.
